Do you or someone you know need long-term help paying rent in the city of Los Angeles? Have you heard about Section 8 (also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program) which offers housing assistance to eligible households by paying a portion of their rent directly to their landlord every month?
Good news: For the first time since 2017, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) will accept online applications for their Section 8 Waiting List Lottery from 6:00 a.m., Monday, October 17 through 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 30, 2022 (Pacific Time).
Visit HACLA.hcvlist.org to read the eligibility criteria and apply online at any time during the two-week open application period – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- You don’t need to rush to apply on the first day! Applying early does not increase your chances of being chosen in the lottery!
- Applications will not be handed out or accepted in-person, by mail, email, or fax at any HACLA office.
- You must have a valid, working email address to apply. If you don’t have an email address, you can create one for free through providers such as Google, Yahoo or Outlook.
- Free Internet access is available at any Los Angeles Public Library.
- At the end of the application period, HACLA will use a random lottery to select 30,000 applicants for placement on the Section 8 Waiting List. A preference for lottery selection will be given to applicants who:
- Live, work, or have been hired to work in the City of Los Angeles,
- And/or are veterans or have a household member who is a veteran, released from military service under conditions other than dishonorable.

- Call HACLA’s waiting list hotline at 213-523-SEC8 (7328) or toll-free 877-621-SEC8 (7328), between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time every day during the application period.
- Individuals with hearing or speech disabilities using TDD or TTY technology may call California Relay Services by dialing 7-1-1 for assistance.
