Alternative Payment Programs
The First 5 LA School Readiness Initiative helps families, schools, and community partners in the 90032 zip code prepare children ages 0-5 with the skills they need to succeed in school. The program provides the following services to nearly 600 children annually:
- a mobile van lending library visiting schools, Head Start sites, and child care providers;
- health, vision, and dental screenings;
- linkages between families of preschool children and five elementary pre-schools;
- annual scholarships for 16 preschool children enabling them to enroll in licensed child care;
- Parents as Teachers in-home training for parents to increase their ability to help their children gain skills needed for kindergarten.

The Alternative Payment program and the CalWORKS (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids) childcare, provide free or low cost subsidized child care for eligible parents who are working, in school, or in approved training programs. These programs serve over 400 families per month.
